Bluelight’s volunteer youth programme participants served our Police who marched in the ANZAC Parade and many others joining afterwards for a bacon butty – the Green by Nature Community BBQ doing the heavy lifting on a beautiful Auckland day.
Along with the Council’s Waitakere’s Parks Ranger, our volunteers helped plant native trees – which was a solid morning’s work. Ensuring that native plantings are taken care of, and adressing areas that require more, is the ranger’s job and we were grateful for the opportunity to make Auckland even more beautiful, through our sustainability facing volunteer work.
We took our BBQ up to feed help volunteers do some native tree planting at the Wellsford Concrete Works site. The weather held off for most of the day, meaning we got over 90 plantings in the ground, which was a real success given we had a smaller group of volunteers – congratulations and thank you to Council Parks Ranger Dan for his organisational work.
Helping kōtiro build a valuable connection with sports and local clubs was the focus of two successful events, recently held in West Auckland.
Under the umbrella of Sport NZ’s It’s Her Move initiative, Sport Waitākere and partners held a Korikori Kōtiro event designed to support kōtiro (girls) with feeling more comfortable with physical activity and ultimately, sparking a desire to do more.
Hosted at Ranui Football, the event saw 15 participants from Girl Guiding West Auckland introduced to football, rippa skills, drills and games focussing on movement, all designed to build confidence and ability to enable them to participate in team sports. Green by Nature supplied the girls with their drink bottles
The Blue Light Youth Driver programme is designed to help support young people to ultimately get their full driver’s licence.
It is especially designed for those young people who may not have access to the right support to be able to learn to drive, e.g. a vehicle or someone to teach them to drive.
Blue Light is committed to training learner drivers to become safer and more responsible drivers on our roads.
These young drivers did a two day course to pass their Learners Licence – we put on a BBQ for them for lunch!
In February, we took our Community BBQ along to the Henderson Heroes Event , along with some prizes and food. We were there alongside our amazing Community Partners and Emergency Services teams.
It was a great day out and fun for the hundreds of families who turned out for it.
