Green by Nature Horowhenua has successfully completed its largest planting
initiative to date, installing over 19,000 wetland plants in the new soakage
basin at Tara Ika, Levin. The project was meticulously planned and executed
to meet the critical November 1st deadline, ensuring optimal timing for root
system establishment before the summer drought period.
The project team faced and overcame several significant challenges:
Management of elevated water levels caused by:
Intense Spring rainfall
Active underground springs
Adaptation of planting techniques to accommodate wet conditions
Coordination of various workforce groups
Meeting strict timeline requirements for seasonal planting
Installation of 19,000+ wetland plants
Site preparation and ongoing maintenance
Project management and workforce coordination
Environmental impact considerations
Timeline management to meet seasonal requirements
Integration of various workforce programs
The project delivered significant social benefits alongside its environmental
impact:
Employment creation through the Mayor’s Taskforce For Jobs program:
4 new positions filled by program applicants, youth engagement and support, partnership with Levin Police Youth Unit, meaningful work experience for 4 at-risk youth
Environmental enhancement:
Creation of a functioning wetland ecosystem, improved local water management infrastructure,
long-term environmental monitoring program established. The project stands as a testament to Green by Nature Horowhenua’s commitment to delivering environmental solutions, while creating meaningful community opportunities. Ongoing monitoring will track the wetland’s
development and success over coming seasons.
